Hale's streets are lined with Victorian and Edwardian houses built when rooms were tall, windows were sash and joinery was meant to last a hundred years. They are wonderful homes and unforgiving ones: the wrong routine shows up quickly, in dust above eye level and dulled original wood.
Why Hale's Older Homes Need a Different Routine
High ceilings, deep coving, tall sash windows and original cornicing all collect dust out of reach and out of sight. In a modern house the eye-level pass is most of the job. In a Hale townhouse it is the top third of the room that people notice when guests arrive, so the routine has to start high and work downwards.
Dust, Original Features and Sash Windows
Sash windows have runners, sills and glazing bars that take time and a light touch. Original fireplaces, cast iron radiators and painted joinery hold dust in every moulding, and old paintwork dislikes anything abrasive. We dust dry and work methodically rather than spraying product onto surfaces, and we keep water well away from timber.
Where Hale Barns Differs
The newer and larger detached houses around Hale Barns and out towards Ashley tend to have open-plan living, extensive glazing and hard floors through the ground floor. That changes the job completely: fewer rooms, far more floor, and glazing that benefits from a proper internal clean. A housekeeper used only to period properties will be slow in a Hale Barns kitchen, and the reverse is just as true.
Working Around Family Life
School runs, work patterns and entertaining all shape when a visit should happen. We fix a day that suits you and keep to it, and where there are children we work around nap times, homework and mealtimes rather than moving the household out of the way.
